HABIT (HIV Abandoned Babies & Infants Trust) is a registered Non-Profit Organisation (056/364) and has been operating in the area for the past 5 years. It was started by the Greenham family who pioneered the Habit model using their own home at 8 Royal Palm Avenue Umhlanga Ridge.
We currently support The Baby House in Umhlanga. This home accommodates up to 4 infants at a time, caring for them in the transition phase between abandonment and placement in a permanent caring family.
The Baby House:
- Provides a happy, loving home for orphaned, abandoned and /or HIV/AIDS infected/affected babies on a transitional basis in the greater Durban area.
- Provides necessary healthcare, including inoculations and testing.
- Ensures babies HIV status is correctly identified as many are labelled positive but have not had the PCR test which tests for the actual virus.
- Administers life saving Anti Retroviral drugs (ARV's) when necessary
- Provides ongoing training and skills development for caregivers.
- Follows due legal process involved in providing transitional care for infants.
- Works closely with Child Welfare when having babies adopted or fostered.
- Is an ambassador for our nation when hosting overseas adoption parents.
- Helps others begin Baby Houses in their area and nationally.
- Works with other similar NGO’s to maximise resources and provide support.
