HABIT (HIV Abandoned Babies & Infants Trust) is registered as an Non-Profit Organisation NPO (056/364). Our aim is to care for HIV/AIDS Affected & Abanoned Babies, providing them with a caring Christian environment in which they are nurtured physically, emotionally & spiritually. We invite you and your organisation, to join us in our work.

A pilot “Baby House” has been established at 8 Royal Palm Avenue in Umhlanga Ridge, and is being run by the Greenham family who gained experience by being actively involved with Esimphiwe, a local charitable trust for HIV affected babies operating in Umhlanga before relocating to Richmond.

Our desire is to encourage the establishment of similiar homes in the community providing a homely environment for the babies. As with our pilot “Baby House”, these homes will care for the babies in the transition phase between being abandoned and being placed in a permanent caring environment.

8 Royal Palm is also run as a Guest House and Conference Centre which will enable prospective parents to be accommodated whilst bonding with the baby they will be adopting. Durban Childrens Society are very keen on this concept. Companies and individuals using the Lodge will be exposed to the work and be invited to make it a part of their Community Social Investment (CSI).

HABIT has five Trustees, one of which is a medical doctor whose team is committed to taking physical care of the babies. This will greatly assist us as the more expensive costs envisaged will be the medical care of the very sick babies. Every effort will be made to give the baby dignity and proper care with the appropriate medication. Where applicable we will administer Anti-retroviral drugs.

The aim of HABIT is to accept into their care babies who have been abandoned or orphaned, especially HIV/AIDS infected/affected children. We desire to provide these babies with a caring Christian environment in which they are nurtured and cared for physically, emotionally and spiritually, with unconditional love.

As a secondary aim the Trust shall be empowered to embark upon various initiatives allied to the primary object, including but not limited to the training and equipping of people with parenting skills.

Currently our main activities are planned as:

  • Taking in Orphaned and abandoned HIV/AIDS infected/affected babies on a transitional basis in the greater Durban, Phoenix, Kwa Mashu communities

  • Testing the babies for HIV as many have been labeled HIV positive but have not had the PCR test which tests for the actual virus.

  • If the children test HIV negative we liaise with Social Services to have them either adopted or placed in foster care

  • Going to Court with the Social Worker to have them placed in our foster care.

  • Annual Charity Cycle Fund Raiser
Be actively involved in the annual 320km Charity cycle, where cyclists ride for 11 hour in one day. Mr Price and CycleLab are involved. This is scheduled for the second Monday in December. Cyclists ride from Drakensburg to Durban in ONE day.
